What Actually Happens at Your First Organizing Session (and Why You Don't Need to Clean First)

Most people who call me start with an apology.

"It's really bad." "I should be able to do this myself." "Please don't judge the basement."

I get it. Letting someone into the part of your house you keep the door closed on is a big deal. So let me take the mystery out of it. Here's what actually happens when you work with Simplify Buffalo, from the first phone call to the day your space works again.

Before the session: an optional call, then a visit

Not sure yet? You can start with a free 15-minute discovery call. You can fill out the form on our contact page, and I'll call you within 1-2 business days, or book a call at a time that suits you.

On that call, we talk through your pain points and what you need help with. We'll chat about location, logistics, pricing, scheduling, and goals. Tell me which spaces are bugging you and what's going on in your life (a move, a new baby, kids' activities taking over every evening). We can build a plan that keeps you involved to save time.

Your project officially begins with the in-home consultation. I ask a LOT of questions. How does your family actually use this room? Who drops what where? What drives you crazy at 7 a.m.? I take measurements and pictures so the systems fit your real space, not a Pinterest one.

From there, you get a plan: how to approach the hands-on sessions and what kinds of organizing products might help.

Do I need to clean before you come?

No. Please don't.

I've said this for years: it's honestly best if you don't clean or tidy before I come. I need to see your home in its natural state so I can spot what's really not working. (The pile on the dining room chair is data. Useful data!)

As I like to say, the worse the before, the better the after.

You don't need to buy bins either. Many clients love that we research and purchase the right products for their space, and we return anything we don't use. Hold off on that Target run until we've sorted. You might already own half of what you need.

The first hours: walkthrough, goals, then sorting

Our team arrives at 8:30 and unloads the supplies for the day (the ones you already approved in your proposal). We bring our own indoor shoes, snacks, and water. You don't need to feed us or fuss over us!

Depending on the project size, our team lead walks through the space with you. Together you go over the goals for the day. Meanwhile, the rest of the team starts staging.

Then we sort. Everything comes out and goes into categories. Like with like. Every phone charger in one spot. Every water bottle in another. (There are always more water bottles than anyone expects.)

This is where a lot of DIY projects stall, because organizing is really nonstop decision-making. Keep or donate? Where should this live? What if I need it someday?

Our job is to break overwhelming tasks into small decisions and ask the right questions so you're never stuck staring at a pile alone.

Here's the part I want every nervous reader to hear: the decisions stay yours. I never discard anything without permission. It's a conversation, not a purge. Nobody is quietly tossing your stuff into a trash bag while you're in the other room.

And nobody is judging!! Our consultations, conversations, and sessions are confidential and judgment-free. Many of our clients are actually very organized people with one "Achilles' heel": the basement, the paperwork, and the toys.

You don't need to be home for the whole session. At the start, we figure out what you want so we can make the most of your time. If we need your input later, our team lead saves up the questions and keeps them short. That way we're not knocking on your office door every ten minutes.

Most sessions have one team lead plus one or two organizers. Bigger projects get more hands. Sessions are booked for five hours. Sometimes we finish early. Sometimes we run a little longer. Five hours is on purpose. Decluttering takes real mental and physical energy, for you and for us, and decision fatigue is real.

What leaves the house

Anything that can be reused, we drop off for donation ourselves. That way it doesn't sit in your garage or trunk for months. We take the time to make sure things go to proper homes, not a landfill. For bigger cleanouts, we can coordinate other help, like Junkluggers.

If you're curious where things can go around Buffalo and WNY, we keep a donation resources page on our website.

What you'll have at the end

A space that works for how your household really lives. Categories that make sense. Things back where you can see them and reach them.

Sometimes that happens in one session. Bigger projects can span a few because the process often goes sort and purge first, then measure, buy, install, and label. That isn't a delay. It's how systems get built to last.

The feeling at the end is the best part. As one client put it, "My home feels lighter."

What happens next

Some people call us months later for the next space. (We always love seeing the original systems still holding up.)

Others like a little help keeping things that way. We offer maintenance visits on a monthly, every-other-month, or seasonal schedule, timed around Buffalo's big weather shifts.

Simplify Buffalo Team

Quick answers

What happens at the first session with a professional organizer? At Simplify Buffalo, Amy or one of our team leads comes over to meet you and see your space. A free 15-minute call beforehand is optional. Hands-on sessions follow: we sort items into categories, you make the keep or donate decisions, we set up systems, and we drop off anything reusable for donation.

Do I need to clean before a professional organizer comes? No. It's best not to clean or tidy first. Seeing your home in its natural state helps us find what isn't working.

Do I have to get rid of things? No. Decluttering is part of the process, but we never discard anything without your permission. Every decision is yours.

Do I need to be home during the session? Not for the whole session. We set goals with you at the start so we can make the most of your time. If questions come up, our team lead saves them up and keeps them short.

Do I need to buy bins first? No. We recommend products in your plan, can research and buy them for you, and return anything we don't use.

How long does a session take, and how many organizers come? Sessions are booked for five hours. Some finish early and some run a little longer. Usually it's one team lead plus one or two organizers, and bigger projects get more team members. Pricing is in our post on what a home organizer costs in Buffalo.

Ready when you are

If you've been putting off reaching out because you're embarrassed, please don't be. Everyone starts somewhere, and getting started is usually the hardest part.

Whenever you're ready, say hi here or call (716) 218-0138. And the coffee table you're avoiding is fine just the way it is. For now 😊
